Yes — wheat is one of the nine major allergens. A wheat allergy (an immune reaction to wheat proteins) is different from celiac disease (an immune reaction to gluten). Introduce wheat on its own and watch your baby after the first taste.
03How to serve wheat to your baby safely
Serve soft, well-cooked wheat foods. Avoid hard crusts and dry crackers in big pieces; cut pasta and bread into small, soft pieces a baby can manage.
- Start with an easy form — iron-fortified wheat cereal, or soft, well-cooked pasta.
- Make it baby-friendly — thin cereal to a smooth texture, or cut pasta into small, soft pieces.
- Offer a small taste, then wait ~10 minutes before offering more.
- Watch for about 2 hours, earlier in the day, when your baby is healthy and you’re at home.
