Shellfish for babies: when & how to introduce it

Shellfish is one of the nine major allergens. It’s often introduced a little later than the others, but early, careful introduction is still encouraged. Here’s how.

01When can babies have shellfish?

Like other common allergens, shellfish can usually be introduced around 6 months, once your baby is eating solids and showing readiness signs — sitting with support, steady head control, and interest in food. If your baby has severe eczema or an existing food allergy, check with your pediatrician about timing first.

02Is shellfish a common allergen?

Yes — shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, and mollusks like clams) is one of the nine major allergens, and shellfish allergy is one of the more common and often lifelong ones. Introduce it on its own and watch your baby closely.

Cross-reactivity note

Crustaceans (shrimp, crab, lobster) tend to cross-react with each other, and mollusks (clams, mussels, scallops) are a related but somewhat separate group. Shellfish and finned fish are different allergens — one doesn’t predict the other.

03How to serve shellfish to your baby safely

Choking hazard

Cook shellfish thoroughly and chop or mince it finely (or purée it). Rubbery, chewy pieces like whole shrimp are a choking hazard for babies — keep pieces small and soft.

  1. Cook it thoroughly — fully cooked shrimp or other shellfish, never raw or undercooked.
  2. Chop or mince finely (or purée) so there are no rubbery pieces.
  3. Offer a small taste, then wait ~10 minutes, watching closely.
  4. Watch for about 2 hours, earlier in the day, when your baby is healthy and you’re at home.

04Keep it in rotation

Once shellfish goes well, keep it in your baby’s diet from time to time. Tolerance is maintained by repeated exposure, not a single taste — though shellfish allergy is one of the more persistent ones, so watch closely each time. Working through all nine allergens? Around 6 months, once your baby is on solids — though many families introduce it a little later than other allergens. Cook it thoroughly, mince or purée it, and watch your baby closely.
How do I serve shrimp to a baby?
Cook the shrimp fully, then chop or mince it very finely (or purée it) so there are no rubbery pieces, and offer a small amount on a spoon.
Is shellfish a common allergen?
Yes — shellfish is one of the nine major allergens and one of the more common, often lifelong, allergies. Introduce it on its own and watch closely.
